Steam Marketplace Fees & CS2 Trade-Up Profitability

Steam takes a 13% cut on every marketplace sale. This fee is the single biggest factor that turns seemingly profitable trade-ups into losers. Understanding its impact is essential for CS2 trading.

How the Steam Fee Works

When you sell a skin on the Steam Community Market, Valve takes approximately 13% of the sale price:

  • Steam transaction fee: ~5% (minimum €0.01)
  • CS2 game fee: ~8.6% (minimum €0.01)
  • Total: ~13% combined

This means: if you sell a skin for €10.00, you receive approximately €8.70. To break even on a trade-up, your output value must be at least ~115% of your input cost.

How Fees Affect Trade-Up ROI

The Steam fee shifts your break-even point significantly:

  • 100% ROI (EV = cost): You LOSE 13% of EV after fees
  • 115% ROI: Break-even after fees
  • 130% ROI: ~13% actual profit
  • 150% ROI: ~30.5% actual profit
  • 200% ROI: ~74% actual profit

This is why TradeUpX applies the 13% fee by default in all calculations. The profit percentages you see already account for the fee.

Strategies to Minimize Fee Impact

While you can't avoid the Steam fee, you can minimize its impact:

  • Target high-value outputs: The fee is percentage-based, so it hurts less on expensive skins where the absolute profit is large
  • Don't trade at low margins: Contracts below 130% ROI have tiny profit margins that the fee can erase
  • Consider trading outside Steam Market: Third-party sites often have lower fees (5–10%), but carry their own risks
  • Batch your trades: Buying multiple inputs at once can be more efficient than one-at-a-time purchases
